Hiking the Hallandsleden trail

Hiking on one of Sweden’s lowland trails

The Hallandsleden trail links up with the Skåneleden trail to the south and Bohusleden to the north. As it wends its way through Halland, the trail divides into an eastern and a western branch at Simlångsgården. The two routes then converge again at Åkulla. From Varberg, you can follow the E1 European long distance path and join the rest of the Hallandsleden trail just before Åkulla.

The countryside is constantly changing. One moment you will be walking through deep forest before emerging into an open landscape with pastures and small red cottages. The Hallandsleden trail follows ancient paths with plenty of traces from the past such as ancient monuments and historic buildings. Many of the sights have information signs.

The entire route is about 360 km long and the trail is divided into 24 stages. The entire Hallandsleden trail is covered by three map sheets. Read more about the map sheets below. The maps are only with text in Swedish.

Walk around the North Sea or across Europe

The North Sea Trail
The Hallandsleden trail is now part of the North Sea Trail (link). Over 5,000 km long, this trail runs round the whole of the North Sea, with a few gaps. The trail passes many natural and historic sites, exploring the differences and similarities of the landscape bordering the North Sea. In the north the Hallandsleden trail joins the Bohusleden trail.

European long distance paths
Parts of the Hallandsleden trail form sections of the European Ramblers’ Association’s system of European long distance paths, the E1 and the E6.

The E1 starts right down in Rome, reaching Sweden at Varberg harbour. From there it follows the Hallandsleden’s second lowland trail northwards, reaching lake Grövelsjön in northern Dalarna after 1,200 km.

The E6 starts from Venice and runs through Sweden between Malmö and Norrtälje. In Halland it joins the Skåneleden trail (link) in the south and the Gislavedsleden trail in the centre of the county.
